Back to School Math Fun

There are loads of great math activities that are perfect for the start of the school year!
In my Back to School Math About Me collection you will find math that the kids will want to do! Here are some of the goodies in this set!

 

The Eliminate Number Game has students record numbers relevant to themselves. Next the teachers reads out cards with clues related to these numbers and students are eliminated if their numbers match the clues.
 
When's My Birthday? is a game related to students' birthdays. It is a little bit like the Higher/Lower number game but instead students try to guess when each student has their birthday. After guessing a date, the student gives the clue, before or after.
 
Students' birthdays can be recorded on the Birthday Charts and this information can be used to create a birthday graph.


 
Students can also create a Numbers About Me poster which doubles as a Number Puzzle for their classmates to solve.

 
This activity, We are Similar and Different is a Venn Diagram activity that requires them to compare themselves to a partner. This is a great activity to launch a discussion about differences and tolerance of differences!

Back to School Board Game Freebies

It is Back to School time and that means its time to get to know each other. That's why I have created this set of printable Back to School board games.
 
 
These games give teachers and children the opportunity to get to know each other. While the children play the games, the teacher can be listening and observing their speaking skills.

There are 3 printable games in this set of Back School Board Games Freebies! You can choose the game that best suits your students or you can use all three games if you like.

This is the Getting to Know You board game. In this game players move around the board and land on pictures as they do. For each picture they refer to the key to find out what they will share with the other players. For example, if they land on a lighthouse, they tell the others somewhere they would like to live. If they land on the cake, they tell something that they can cook!

This game is called My Favorites. In this game the children move one counter to the center and back to the start again. As they do they tell the others their favourite things, e.g. favourite place to play, favourite fruit, favourite season etc. There is no winner or loser as they work as a team to get to the center and back again to the start.

 
The Tell Me About game has the players tell things about them like, their favourite movie, something that makes them happy, something they would like to learn etc.
This is a great game to get the kids really thinking and sharing information on a deeper level!

These game are the perfect way to start the year. They are great for getting to know your students and also for establishing rules like taking turns. As the children play, the teacher can also observe how the students interact and work in a group.

Back to School Math

As you get to know your new class, you want your first math lessons to be interesting and engaging! One great way to do this is to make the math all about them!
Here is a great activity that is based on their names. I love the Name Values activity as not only is it about their names (and they always seem to love playing around with their names) but it also gets them adding and estimating. The best thing about this activity though is that you can challenge them and add an element of problem solving! Here is how it works.

Name Values

Start by writing the alphabet on the board. Then under each letter add a value - the easiest way to do this is to put 1 under a, 2 under b, 3 under c and so on!

When each letter has a value ask students the following questions.

What is the value of your name?
What is the value of a classmate's name?
Whose name in the class has the highest value?
Whose name has the lowest value?

And you can get even more challenging by asking them questions such as these.
Whose name has a value of  between 20 and 25?
Whose name has a value of 30 or whose name value is closest to 30?
